KU is the Best Football Team Ever

Okay, maybe not the best football team ever, but KU did beat Missouri, Nebraska, and pulled out a tough win in over time against Iowa State on Saturday.

By beating ISU, KU finishes the season 6-5 and should go to a bowl game for the second time in three years, a big step forward for KU football.

Research Update From KU APM

The KU Applied Portfolio Management Program has new research out covering a variety of companies the class has investigated this semester. The research includes coverage of important portfolio holdings like Inergy, and new positions like Winnebago, which the class purchased after a great presentation from Mark Whitaker of Wellington Asset Management.

For those of you unfamiliar with the KU APM program, since its founding in 1994 by hedge fund manager Kent McCarthy, the APM has allows students to run a real investment portfolio, now valued at just under $1 million. Each week the students in the class research a company and write a full research report, the class then votes to buy or sell the company. The portfolio has performed well, consistently beating its benchmarks.

Buffett Buys Wal-Mart

On Monday Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway announced that they have acquired approximately 20 million shares of Wal-Mart worth about $874 million. This amounts to a little less than one half of one percent of all outstanding Wal-Mart shares, making Buffett and Berkshire one of the top 20 owners of Wal-Mart.

As I had said in mid September (approximately the time Buffett was buying), Wal-Mart stock had begun to really look cheap on a enterprise value to EBITDA basis at just over $43 per share. The Wal-Mart buy makes a lot of sense for Berkshire and its portfolio of great consumer brands. At $50 per share today, it seems that Buffett has already made a nice profit on his investment.

I should also mention that Berkshire also bought $1.9 billion worth of Budweiser, a purchase that seems very similar to Buffett's purchase of Coca-Cola stock years ago.
